This piece is about duality. Duality or dual simply means two, looking at something as having two opposing or contrasting sides. The mind uses duality to make sense of everything. In this image, the rocks are above the water and below. They are both wet and dry, dark and light. The subject matter is solid and liquid. Black and white.
This is all relatively true, but fundamentally all of these dualities are not as clear-cut as we imagine. The surface of the water bends and flows becoming unclear where above water ends and below water begins. The dry rocks have been slightly splashed and the humidity in the air means nothing is completely dry. The dark areas are just a different level of light. The water is liquid, but only at a certain temperature, the rocks are solid but only at a certain temperature. Lastly, the image is not black and white, but varying tones of grey.
This image was shot in late winter in 2021. It was shot on a Nikon F3 camera on expired Kodak T-MAX 400 35mm film.
